Favourite things about Cambodia

So, I have found that there are several things that have been wonderful here, and I want to keep a record :)

1) Getting all my washing done for $4 a week – supporting the local economy :)
2) 3 words : “The Blue Pumpkin”. I am sitting here now – at their riverside location. Think an Asian version of walking along the Yarra… or South Perth, with way more shops, people, people playing badminton or football, cafes and restaurants. Then, from a 2nd floor, a pristine, modern, white, black and glass restaurant, with a glass frontage all along the riverfront side, the most amazing view of Phnom Penh. With aircon and wifi, bed-sized couches with little tables to eat on the bed, it is definitely my favourite place here atm. Oh, and their other Phnom Penh location is upstairs over a large English book shop…
3) New Life Christian Fellowship. I love this church. With Khmer services, and English radio translation for all the expats who attend, songs with words in Khmer and English, so many areas of outreach and assistance for church members and the wider community, a vision to establish an equipping church in every Cambodian province, pentecostal heritage and a wonderful culture, I have been so blessed already here. I do want to visit some other churches around the place, but I have definitely found my home here – see the links from the main page.
4) Expat friends – it has been so good to have conversations with friends from Australia, New Zealand, USA, England and other places. It definitely helps me reconcile myself to the culture to hear stories about other people doing the same.

Getting my hair cut, coloured, straightened and treated for US$30.

6) Finding some old favourite friends (that is, beloved books) in the 2nd hand stores to read. And finding new books to read. I should include my new favourite church book, “Deliberate Simplicity”, at this point. It has really helped me clarify what is important about “church” – something I have long wrestled with. Please read it! Or ask me for a legal copy…
7) There are no copyright laws in Cambodia. There are shops dedicated to doing professional copies of books – I will definitely be making use of these :)
8 ) There is a Gloria Jeans here. I haven’t been yet, but it looks exactly the same as the Aussie ones, and it is on my list of places to visit.
9) Jars of Clay – so close to my house, great food – English and Khmer, and stacks of people praying make a great atmosphere.
10) The Coffee House – across the road from Jars of Clay, modern interior, best bathroom facilities I’ve seen in Phnom Penh :) good food, brilliant air con.
11) There is a swing dance club here! I haven’t had a chance to go yet, but they have lessons and I will definitely be attending!
